What is the grounds project?
Claxton is located near downtown, directly on Merrimon Avenue.  Because of our land constraints, we have to maximize our space so we can use it for learning, play, environmental awareness, food education and school gatherings. Outdoor learning is essential in helping children gain independence, develop social skills and group development. As a Title 1 school, we embrace the belief that enriching our curriculum with outdoor studies is crucial to bridging the achievement gap.  Hands on learning outside helps students connect with what they learn and develop a life-long love of learning.

The grounds committee, along with many parent and community volunteers, has been working tirelessly for years to improve Claxton's grounds to the benefit of our students, staff and community. We've made substantial progress by expanding and improving the K-1 playground, installing shade trees and gardens around the grounds, and beginning work on a natural buffer for traffic noise allowing the area at the front of the school to be used as outdoor classrooms.

We have a long way to go!  The long-range plan for the grounds also includes an extensive renovation of the large playground, relocation of the existing play structure, a running track and the building of an outdoor amphitheater to be used for classes and performances.  We have just one city block, so where will all of that go?  Explore the plan here.

How can you help?  Get involved!  Whether it's showing up to pull weeds and plant trees or making a financial contribution, every little bit helps.   Keep an eye on what's scheduled, or join the great list of local companies who have donated plants, labor and materials to our project.

We encourage you to come by, see our beautiful progress and support what we're doing today!
